In a surprising turn of events, Andrea Kimi Antonelli has been involved in a car accident shortly before heading to Bahrain for the Formula 1 pre-season testing, yet remarkably, he emerged from the incident without any injuries.
Just prior to his trip to Bahrain, Antonelli experienced a collision on the roads of Serravalle. According to reports from local traffic authorities, the crash involved only his vehicle striking a guardrail, with no other cars implicated in the incident.
Mercedes confirmed the details in an official statement, noting, "Last Saturday evening, near his home in San Marino, Kimi was involved in a road accident. The police arrived at the scene following a call from him. His car was the sole vehicle involved, and although it sustained some damage, Kimi remained completely unharmed."
At the time of the accident, Antonelli was driving a limited edition Mercedes AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+, known as the 'Motorsport Collectors Edition', with only 200 units ever made. This exclusive model features unique attributes, including hand-painted bodywork adorned with Petronas livery and advanced technical specifications.
Among these specifications is an aerodynamic design aimed at minimizing lift along with an optimized cooling system. At its heart lies a powerful 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that generates an impressive 612 horsepower, affirming the car’s elite status within the automotive world.
Fortunately, this unfortunate incident is not anticipated to disrupt Antonelli’s participation in the upcoming Bahrain test schedule. He is set to take the wheel of the Mercedes W17 on the first day’s afternoon session, followed by another drive in the morning of the second day and again during the afternoon of the final day. His teammate George Russell will be at the helm for the corresponding driving sessions.
The first of the Bahrain pre-season tests kicks off tomorrow, followed by a second testing phase at the same location scheduled for February 18-20.
Also worth noting:
• Antonelli recently expressed that younger drivers should indeed gain advantages from the changes in Formula 1 regulations, highlighting the evolving landscape of the sport.
• Additionally, there has been ongoing discussion among Mercedes' competitors regarding the need for intervention related to engine loopholes in F1, raising questions about the potential impact on the competitive balance.
