Adrian Durham argues that Arsenal’s decision to reward Bukayo Saka with a new contract has unfairly undercut Declan Rice, and he suggests Rice should consider leaving if he doesn’t secure a better deal. Arsenal announced Saka’s extension on Thursday afternoon, just after a midweek stumble at Wolves that left their Premier League lead slimmer and more vulnerable in the title race.
Arsenal had a two-goal advantage slip away against Wolves, a result that leaves them five points clear of Manchester City but having played one more game. With City looming in April as a potential title decider, the season looks set to go down to the wire.
Sources indicate Saka will earn north of £300,000 a week, making him Arsenal’s highest-paid player and surpassing Kai Havertz in the wage pecking order.
Durham contends that Rice must be furious about the substantial pay rise for Saka and frames the move as a public slight to Rice’s own contributions. He described Rice as everything a team could ask for—consistently available, relentlessly covering ground, never simulating injuries, and acting as the team’s heartbeat—even suggesting Rice is more of a captain than Odegaard.
From that perspective, Durham sees the Saka deal as dismissive of Rice’s value. He questions whether Arsenal’s leadership truly respects Rice’s talents and implies that Rice’s representatives should push for improved terms or even consider a summer exit if fair compensation isn’t provided.
Durham went further on Fiery Fridays, urging Rice’s camp to press Arteta for a higher deal and to contemplate a move if Arsenal cannot meet those demands. He framed the Saka contract as a symbolic knife in Rice’s back, implying that the club’s financial priorities may not align with Rice’s status and contributions.
Rice’s performances this season have kept him in contention for Ballon d’Or recognition, reflecting his standing as one of Europe’s elite players.
Looking ahead, Arsenal travel across London to face Tottenham in the North London Derby, a fixture that will test newly appointed Spurs interim coach Igor Tudor after Thomas Frank’s dismissal. Tottenham, who recently slipped toward the relegation zone, face questions about their financial and competitive trajectory as they navigate the stake of staying in the top flight.
