Justin Allgaier's Honest Reaction to the Daytona 500 Wreck: Taking Responsibility (2026)

Justin Allgaier Takes Blame for Major Wreck at Daytona 500, Explains What He Saw

A chaotic crash at the Daytona 500 left 20 drivers involved, disrupting the race and affecting many. Justin Allgaier, who was leading the race, took full responsibility for the incident, despite it being caused by contact with Denny Hamlin. In an interview on the FOX Sports broadcast, Allgaier admitted his mistake, stating, 'I'm going to take 100% responsibility for that one. I hate it for everyone caught up in it. It's just really frustrating.'

The crash occurred due to a misjudgment by Allgaier. He explained, 'I thought Denny was going to push. I felt the lane was narrow enough that he wouldn't try to go out. When I realized he was going out, it was too late. The air on the right rear spoiler kept me turning to the right.'

Hamlin, who received a push from Ryan Blaney, aimed for a small gap between the outside wall and Allgaier. However, Allgaier's position and potential movement blocked Hamlin's path. The result was a spin for Allgaier, sending him and several other cars into the infield and across the track.

Despite the crash, Allgaier had a strong start to the day. Racing for JR Motorsports with an open entry, he pushed his way forward and even led the race. His car, the No. 40 Traveller Whiskey Chevrolet, performed exceptionally well throughout the day.

Allgaier expressed his satisfaction with the car's performance, saying, 'Our car was incredible all day. The team did a great job building a racecar that could run up front and lead laps.'

However, the crash marked a challenging end to Allgaier's day. He even encountered a tow truck issue on his way to the garage, further complicating his race. Despite the setbacks, Allgaier remained positive, vowing to learn from the experience and improve for future races.

He concluded, 'I hate it for everyone caught up in it, but we had a fast car and were going forward. I'll watch the video and figure out how to improve. I'm grateful for the opportunity and the support from our partners, including the Hendrick engine shop.'

Despite the crash, Allgaier's determination and commitment to learning from his mistakes showcase his dedication to the sport and his desire to excel in the future.
