The NFL Players Association is on the brink of a decision that could shape its future—and it’s already sparking debate. Who will lead the NFLPA as its next executive director? Despite efforts to keep the process under wraps, the names of the three finalists have leaked, and they’re raising eyebrows. But here’s where it gets controversial: among the contenders are interim executive director David White, former NFLPA chief strategy officer JC Tretter, and American Conference commissioner Tim Pernetti. And this is the part most people miss—Pernetti has no prior experience working for labor unions, while Tretter’s re-emergence is surprising given his ties to the previous director, Lloyd Howell, who resigned amid scandal.
According to ESPN’s Don Van Natta Jr. and Kalyn Kahler, these finalists are part of a ‘strong pool of highly qualified candidates,’ as NFLPA president Jaylen Reeves-Maybin stated. Yet, the union’s insistence on secrecy has only fueled speculation. When Howell was hired in 2023, the NFLPA managed to keep all candidates confidential—until months later, when White’s name slipped out. This time, the leaks have come much sooner, leaving many to wonder: Is history repeating itself?
White’s interim role was widely seen as a stepping stone to the permanent position, but Tretter’s inclusion is a head-scratcher. After all, he played a direct role in hiring Howell, whose tenure was cut short by a string of controversies. Howell even appointed Tretter as chief strategy officer, leading some to believe Tretter was being groomed for bigger things. Now, his candidacy feels like a plot twist no one saw coming.
Pernetti, 55, brings a different kind of experience to the table. Before becoming commissioner of the American Conference in 2024, he led the IMG Academy and served as chief business officer for New York City FC. However, his time as Rutgers’ Athletic Director ended abruptly in 2013 after he failed to fire men’s basketball coach Mike Rice, whose abusive behavior toward players was caught on video. The incident, which included Rice throwing balls at players and using homophobic slurs, raised questions about Pernetti’s judgment. Does this history disqualify him from leading the NFLPA? Or does his diverse background make him a fresh perspective?
The other candidates who didn’t make the cut—former NFLPA president Domonique Foxworth, ex-NFL quarterback Matt Schaub, and former player Jeff Saturday—highlight the high stakes of this decision. Foxworth, now at ESPN, didn’t hold back his disappointment: ‘I hope they get it right this time,’ he said. But with the finalists announced, it’s fair to ask: Are these the best options for such a critical role at such a pivotal moment for the NFLPA?
This isn’t just about who gets the job—it’s about the future of player representation in the NFL. The next executive director will face tough challenges, from negotiating contracts to addressing player safety concerns. With the NFLPA’s recent history of leadership turmoil, the pressure is on to make the right choice.
What do you think? Is one of these finalists the right fit, or should the NFLPA have looked elsewhere? Let us know in the comments—this is a conversation worth having.
